Welcome To Ventnor, New Jersey

ventnor city nj

The earliest history of the barrier island off the coast of New Jersey containing the city of Ventnor is that of the other cities located on the island, as well. It involves the Lenni Lenape native Americans whose presence pre-dated the arrival of Europeans in search of a passage to India by hundreds – perhaps thousands – of years. The Lenape people made good use of all the islands off the coast of New Jersey as places for relief from the summer heat, an abundant supply of fish and shellfish, and the beauty of the natural environment, and their life on the islands has been traced back to the 1500’s.

With the arrival of settlers the Lenni Lenape moved away, and the story of the cities located on this barrier island involve each other’s development, so much so that Ventnor, Margate and Longport were once known as South Atlantic City in the late 1800’s.

The island was occupied on and off during the 1700’s and 1800’s by whalers, Revolutionary War privateers, fishermen and others who sought refuge there.

Ventnor, New Jersey received its name thanks to an American couple’s trip abroad. While visiting Ventnor, England the couple fell in love with the beauty of the area, and after returning to the United States Mrs. S. Bartram Richards suggested to her husband, who was the secretary-treasurer of the Camden and Atlantic Land Company, that the perfect name for the area south of Atlantic City would be Ventnor. Mrs. Richards made her suggestion on January 8, 1889, and the name was formally adopted the next day.  However, the name of Ventnor was not officially adopted until March 17, 1903 when the New Jersey state legislature executed the act of incorporation for Ventnor City.

Ventnor City, New Jersey, located in Atlantic County, is home to a population today of 12,910 people (2000 Census).

Ventnor is a community of homes, and Ventnor Avenue, named after the town, runs all the way from Atlantic City through Ventnor proper, on through the town of Margate, and finally ends in the town of Longport. Ventnor’s homes range from magnificent oceanfront mansions to smaller vintage bungalows, with every style of architecture being represented throughout the streets of the town.

Quiet, with an amusement-free boardwalk running its full length, the town offers a spectacular view of the Atlantic City skyline when people are walking its beaches or are on the boardwalk. The boardwalk in Ventnor is a great place to ride a bike in the early morning (up until 10:00 a.m. when bikes must leave the boardwalk to give way to pedestrians for the balance of the day and evening in the summer season), and a super place for a stroll at anytime. Simply sitting on a bench and watching the ocean is a great way to relax.

The Ventnor boardwalk joins the boardwalk of its very famous neighbor to the north: Atlantic City. The casino/hotels in Atlantic City are open 24/7. The boardwalk makes the casino experience vastly different from other places where casino gambling is the main industry. There are not many places where you can walk out of a luxury hotel/casino and right onto the boardwalk and hit the beach. There are short stretches of the “boards” that have been replaced with different and, hopefully, more durable materials. Sometimes there is a stretch of “composite” boards, and aluminum has also been used as a surface, but the integrity of the design (these materials are designed to look like boards) is maintained throughout.

Still other benefits found in Ventnor, besides its access to Atlantic City, are the many stores, restaurants and specialty shops lining Ventnor Avenue that offer residents and visitors great shopping and food just a couple blocks from the beach.

Ventnor’s beaches are well-maintained, and the fishing pier, nearby golf range and ice-skating rink provide fun for visitors. Given Ventnor City, New Jersey’s location, it is ideal for day-trippers, vacationers and  residents who enjoy the boards, the beach and the bedazzling experience of its nearby neighbor to the north – coupled with the fact that when  it’s time to go home, Ventnor’s quiet streets are waiting at the end of the day.
